It's hard to believe that Karnten Ironman Austria is only 10 years old - it seems as though this event has been a major part of the Ironman series for much longer than that.The first Ironman distance event was held here in 1998. A year later Peter Reid and Wendy Ingraham lit up the course here in Klagenfurt with 7:51 and 9:02 clockings, sending a clear message to the world that if you were after a fast time, Austria was the place to come. Marino Vanhoenacker defended his Karnten Ironman Austria title in brilliant fashion today, following up a strong swim with an incredible bike that left him well ahead of his competition. Two years ago Marino Vanhoenacker thought he was on track to claim his first Ironman title in Klagenfurt. Riding well and about to take the lead as he began the steepest climb on the course, disaster struck. His front wheel simply fell apart before his eyes. The Ironman Austria Triathlon takes place in the lakeside resort city of Klagenfurt, in the summer sport paradise of Carinthia. Located some 310km south of Vienna, between Italy and Slovenia, the area is considered to be the Copacabana of the Alps and one of the most beautiful places in the world.
